Gretna Public Schools | Hosted by the Citizens’ Committee
What if we could better understand the things our kids wish they could tell us, but may be too afraid to say?
On Thursday, November 12, 2026, Gretna Public Schools invites parents, guardians, educators, and community members to hear nationally recognized speaker Stephen Mackey present “Five Things Students Wish Adults Knew…But Are Too Afraid to Tell Them.” This engaging session explores the pressures, fears, and hopes young people face and offers practical ways adults can better support them.
As co-author of The Locker Room and founder of 2Words Character Development, Mackey draws on conversations with young people to explore what they may be experiencing beneath the surface and how adults can build stronger connections and create space for honest conversations.
Mackey is no stranger to Gretna. For two years, he has worked with students and student leaders across Gretna Public Schools. His return brings the conversation to the broader community, giving parents, educators, and other caring adults an opportunity to connect more meaningfully with the young people in their lives.
An Evening for Everyone Who Cares About Kids
You don’t have to be a parent of a middle schooler or high schooler to benefit. Parents, guardians, grandparents, educators, coaches, mentors, and other caring adults all play a role in helping young people feel understood and supported.
Between school, friendships, social pressures, and the constant influence of technology, young people face challenges adults may not always see or fully understand. Mackey encourages adults to slow down, listen with intention, and consider what kids may be experiencing beneath the surface. Attendees will leave with fresh perspectives and practical ideas for building stronger connections and supporting the young people in their lives.
Both Gretna high schools will host community exhibits where families can learn about local resources and support for children and families. Eighth-grade registration will also take place at both locations that evening, making it a convenient opportunity for families to connect, learn, and take part in the Gretna community.
